US announces $400m in military assistance for Ukraine

A fresh $400 million (€394 million) military aid package for Ukraine was unveiled by the White House on Thursday. This funding will cover air defence equipment.

The package includes “significant air defence contributions,” according to Jake Sullivan, the White House national security adviser, including missiles for Hawk air defence systems and US Avenger air defence systems that are fitted with Stinger missiles.

Additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and other weapon systems, 100 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV), 400 grenade launchers, demolition equipment for clearing obstacles, and cold weather protective gear are also part of the package, according to a Pentagon statement.

Sullivan added that there are some indications that Russian forces may be preparing to leave the Ukrainian city of Kherson.

According to him, the Russian departure from some regions of Ukraine does not signal the end of the conflict there. Sullivan continued by saying that Washington was not pressuring Ukraine to discuss the situation diplomatically with Russia.

Madrid also announced its intention to provide anti-missile and air defence equipment, comprising four HAWK missile launchers and an Aspide surface-to-air missile system, at the beginning of the current month.

Because we recognise that Ukraine is exercising its legal right to self-defence, Robles stated, “We are strongly committed to Ukraine.”
