During his emotional farewell speech at the 2022 Laver Cup at the 02 Arena in London on Friday night, tennis legend Roger Federer, who played the final match of his career there, was overcome with emotion.
After the defeat, his teammates gave him a hug before asking him to say a few words about the final game.
He lost in doubles at the Laver Cup while playing with longtime rival Rafael Nadal, bringing an end to his career as a professional sportsman.
Federer and Nadal, representing Team Europe, lost to Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock, representing Team World, 6-4, 6-7 (2/7), and 9-11.
Federer described his journey as “amazing.” The Swiss star added, playing for the first time since Wimbledon 2021 due to a knee injury, “It’s been a wonderful day.”
“I assured the guys that I am not depressed. Being here feels wonderful. Everything was the last time, so I enjoyed tying my shoes one more time “he stated.
Federer accepted the microphone from retired tennis player Jim Courier, who also gave him a hug and offered his congratulations on his journey.
The 20-time Grand Slam winner thanked his teammates, especially Nadal, for supporting him at this point in his career.
