After a TikTok challenge, the FDA warns against cooking chicken in NyQuil

After a TikTok challenge, the FDA warns against cooking chicken in NyQuil as safety concerns mount.

The US Food and Drug Administration stated that preparing chicken with cough syrup ‘NyQuil’ is not only silly and unpleasant, but it can also be extremely unsafe, in response to the “sleepy chicken” TikTok challenge.

According to the FDA, several videos urged viewers to prepare chicken in NyQuil, over-the-counter cough and cold medicine that also contains acetaminophen, dextromethorphan, and doxylamine.

In a notice, the FDA stated that boiling medicine can greatly increase its concentration as well as alter its properties in other ways.

“Even if you don’t eat the chicken, inhaling the drug vapors while it’s cooking could still lead to significant drug ingestion. It might also cause lung damage.”

The FDA has previously issued advisories against using over-the-counter medication in social media challenges.

The FDA released a similar warning in September 2020 in response to reports of teenagers being taken to hospitals or passing away after taking the “Benadryl Challenge” on the short-video app.
